Q@A w/Leon Acord on Old Dogs at Real Steve Gray's Blog

"I wanted to do a show where gay men were the leads, where they spoke like gay men, and found themselves in the type of situations that they would talk about with their gay friends. I wanted characters that made mistakes, who didn’t ‘act their age,’ who weren’t always noble, who had sex and didn’t have to pay a price or seek redemption."

Mark Your Calendar: Web Series Unplugged Jan 18, 2012

PSSST:  Rumor has it one of our new episodes will screen at Web Series Unplugged at El Cid Nightclub on Wed., Jan 18!  Mark your calendar, more information coming soon!

“Old Dogs & New Tricks” unleashed! The hot new web series returns with four sexy new off-the-hook episodes!

Returning January 8th with fresh episodes, Old Dogs & New Tricks continues the story of four successful, middle-aged gay best friends, all struggling to stay vital and relevant in youth-obsessed West Hollywood.

With its several intertwining plotlines, Old Dogs & New Tricks is more adult and complex than most web series; think Entourage set in gay WeHo, which is why the Pilot scored a 95% ‘like’ rating from viewers and also received more than 5,000 YouTube views in less than two months of its debut.

Creator and star Leon Acord is excited about building on the heat generated by the pilot -- in more ways than one.  He promises that "while the show is about the relationships between the main characters, we won’t shy away from sexual dialogue and content inherent in a show about four gay guys."  Producing partner Laurence Whiting agrees, and adds to look for some sharp, co mic interactions:  "Be warned, the gloves are off.  Watch for some serious sparks to fly."

The new season boasts unique guest stars including hunky Thom Bierdz (Young and the Restless), comedian Patrick Bristow (Ellen, Austin Powers, Showgirls) as a hilarious psychiatrist, and Bruce L. Hart (The Reckoning, Homewrecker) playing a bitchy professional “frenemy”.

Acord (Carved in StoneSome Prefer Cake), Curt Bonnem (Kowalski, Lovelace: The Rock Opera), Jeffrey Patrick Olson (Daddy), and David Pevsner (Naked Boys SingingTo Bitter and Back) star as the four friends. Other recurring roles include cabaret star Amanda Abel and Ryland Shelton.

David Pevsner, Jeffrey Patrick Olson, Leon Acord & Curt Bonnem

Old Dogs & New Tricks was created and written by Leon Acord, and developed for the web and directed by Arvin Bautista (Archie’s Final Project). Matt Ladensack, Whiting, and Acord serve as Co-Executive Producers. The show’s score was composed by veteran film and television composer Nic. tenBroek (Dark Angel, Xena: Warrior Princess).

WeHo News Q&A w/Leon Acord About ODNT's Upcoming Season

Old Dogs perform new tricks for second season
Vol. 7 Issue 9   09/28/2011
WeHo webisodes by Elliot Latta, West Hollywood, CA

The West Hollywood-based web series Old Dogs & New Tricks returns for a second season with guest stars Thom Bierdz and Patrick Bristow.

The West Hollywood-based web series Old Dogs & New Tricks cast.
After working in what he describes as “spectacular obscurity” for almost 20 years, actor/writer Leon Acord seems on the precipice of Hollywood success, thanks to a “one-two punch.”

First, his portrayal of Quentin Crisp in SF and LA productions of playwright Jeffrey Hartgraves’ Carved in Stone earned Acord raves of which actors only dream.

Now, his web series pilot Old Dogs & New Tricks, in which Acord stars, (having also created, written and co-produced), has been so well received that four new episodes will be shot in November, with the big name talent mentioned above in returning guest-starring roles.

Young & the Restless' Thom Bierdz Joins ODNT in Recurring Guest Role

Young & the Restless Thom Bierdz will go from Genoa City to WeHo this fall, joining the cast of the web sitcom Old Dogs & New Tricks as a recurring special guest star.

Bierdz will play “Bobby Burton,” a FOX Sports anchor and potential love interest for Muscles (Jeffrey Patrick Olson).

Well-known to soap fans, Bierdz portrayed teenage heir “Phillip Chancellor III” in the mid-1980s on Y&R, until his character was killed off in an automobile accident.  In 2009, Bierdz returned to the show, where his character explained he’d faked his death to protect his family from discovering his homosexuality – making Chancellor the first major gay character in Young & the Restless’ long history, and earning Bierdz the historic honor of being the first openly gay actor hired for a contract role on a soap opera.

His other acting credits include St. Elmo’s Fire, and television’s Melrose Place, Murder She Wrote, Matlock and Highway to Heaven

Bierdz is also an accomplished author and painter.  His memoir Forgiving Troy has won many awards, including “Best Indie Autobiography” from USA Books News and a nomination for a Lambda Literary Award.  He is the 2006 recipient of the “Key to the Light” award from Thalians/Cedars Sinai.  His paintings have raised over $100,000 for charities across the country, and earned him the title “Best Emerging Artist Los Angeles” from Out Magazine in 2005.  The Belsito-Roche Gallery (www.belsitorochegallery.com) in Long Beach hosts a show of his artwork November 19.  Learn more at his website at www.thombierdz.com.

"I'm so excited to work with Thom!,” says actor Olson. “He’s won such respect building an honorable life as an artist, being true to himself …. It will be so surreal working together as I've been a fan since his initial run on Y&R (my only soap) in my late teens on study breaks from Organic Chemistry.”

Old Dogs & New Tricks begins shooting in November, and will premiere Jan. 8, 2012 with a two-part episode.  The show is raising funds for its first season via the crowd-sourcing site IndieGoGo.  To help, please visit http://www.indiegogo.com/Old-Dogs-New-Tricks-First-4-Episodes.

Patrick Bristow Joins ODNT In Guest Role

Patrick Bristow will guest star on Old Dogs & New Tricks first season, in what producers hope will become a recurring role.

Patrick Bristow
Bristow, who’s familiar to audiences from numerous TV and film appearances, will play Dr. Keebler, psychiatrist to the show’s lead character, talent agent Nathan Adler (Leon Acord).

Bristow’s complete TV and film credits are too numerous to list, but include recurring guest appearances on CSI, Malcolm in the Middle, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld and Mad About You.  He was a regular on Ellen during DeGeneres’ historic coming out, appeared frequently on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and co-starred in Showgirls and the original Austin Powers.  He’s also well known in LA’s improv community as a teacher and performer with Improvatorium.

Writer/producer Acord hopes it’s just the first appearance of many!  “I’m a huge fan of Patrick’s!  I’d love it if he came back again and again!  God knows Nathan needs a good shrink,” he jokes.

Old Dogs & New Tricks follows four middle-aged gay best friends living in youth-obsessed West Hollywood.  Acord (Carved in Stone, Some Prefer Cake), Curt Bonnem (Kowalski; Lovelace: The Rock Opera), Jeffrey Patrick Olson (Daddy) and David Pevsner (Naked Boys Singing, To Bitter and Back) star as the four friends; cabaret star Amanda Abel and Ryland Shelton appear in recurring roles.

The web series is written/created by Acord, and is developed for the web and directed by Arvin Bautista (Archie’s Last Project).  Matt Ladensack, Laurence Whiting and Acord serve as Co-Executive Producers.  The show’s score is composed by veteran film and TV composer Nic. tenBroek (Dark Angel, Xena: Warrior Princess).

Old Dogs & New Tricks begins shooting its first season in November, to premiere on line on Jan. 8, 2012 with a two-part episode.  The show is currently raising funds for its first season via the crowd-sourcing site IndieGoGo.  To help, please visit http://www.indiegogo.com/Old-Dogs-New-Tricks-First-4-Episodes.

ODNT Prepares to Shoot First Season!

Aug. 31,  2011 – West Hollywood, CA – Thanks to the success of the pilot of Old Dogs & New Tricks, the new web series will begin production in November on its first season, which will premiere on a weekly basis on YouTube and at its website in January 2012.

Producers plan to utilize the fundraising site IndieGoGo to help raise funds for the first four episodes.  They previously used the site to great success to raise funds for the pilot.

Old Dogs & New Tricks focuses on four diverse, successful gay best friends—each located squarely within middle age and struggling to stay vital and relevant in youth-obsessed West Hollywood—and how they react (or overreact) and adjust (or not) to getting older

The pilot of the new web series, released July 30, 2011, has scored more than 3,600 YouTube views in less than one month, with a 95% “like” rating, with no other marketing than their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

“Think The Birdcage meets Sex and the City, and you’ve got an idea of how this fabulously fun show plays,” wrote the website Placevine.com, which covers the web TV industry.

“The response absolutely exceeded our expectations,” says show’s star/creator Leon Acord, “and we’re very grateful for the positive reaction, and to have the chance to continue with the show!”

Acord (Carved in Stone, Some Prefer Cake), Curt Bonnem (Kowalski; Lovelace: The Rock Opera), Jeffrey Patrick Olson (Daddy) and David Pevsner (Naked Boys Singing, To Bitter and Back) star; cabaret star Amanda Abel and Ryland Shelton appear in recurring roles.  Producers promise one or two name guest stars as well, the names of which they will divulge at a later time.

Old Dogs & New Tricks is written/created by Acord, and is developed for the web and directed by Arvin Bautista (My Suicide).  Matt Ladensack, Laurence Whiting and Acord serve as Co-Executive Producers.  The show’s score is composed by veteran film and TV composer Nic. tenBroek (Dark Angel, Xena: Warrior Princess).

Old Dogs & New Tricks focuses on four diverse, successful gay best friends—each located squarely within middle age—and how they react (or overreact) and adjust (or not) to getting older in youth-obsessed West Hollywood.

“Think The Birdcage meets Sex and the City, and you’ve got an idea of how this fabulously fun show plays,” wrote the website Placevine.com, which covers the web TV industry.

The producers plan to shoot a new two-part episode, then use it and the pilot to raise funds for an eight-episode first season series.

Who Says You Can’t Teach ‘Old Dogs New Tricks’?

by Lance Trachtenberg on August 3, 2011

Just because a person reaches a certain age, that doesn’t necessarily equate with and “ending of an era”, so to speak. With our society’s overly age conscious viewpoint on all things from pop culture to an unending amount of elixirs and remedies stocking the drug store shelves that claim a guarantee to push our biological clocks back to the golden ages of porcelain smooth skin and Adonis toned bodies, we as a nation are constantly bombarded with a continuous message-being old is bad. This ageism inspired message seems to carry little or no weight with the characters of the funny middle ager set web show ’Old Dogs-New Tricks’. And if it does bother them, they don’t let it show.

"Think 'The Birdcage’ meets ’Sex and the City’, and you’ve got an idea of how this fabulously fun show plays."

The show follows the life of recently turned fifty talent agent Nathan Adler (Leon Acord) and his exploits in the Hollywood scene, as well as the ups and downs of his off the clock life. When Leon’s not working hard just to maintain some modicum of sanity while engaged in his super speed job environment, he’s busy trying to meet all the relation ship expectations put upon him by his partner Brad King (Curt Bonnem), an ex 80’s pop star who defines the description of high maintenance [actually, they're just best friends!]. When he’s not portraying the series lead, Leon Acord doubles as series creator, and he’s put together an interesting clip series focusing on a group of friends trying to get by in the wilds of West Hollywood. Think ’The Birdcage’ meets ’Sex and the City’, and you’ve got an idea of how this fabulously fun show plays.

Pull up some desk chair and follow along with Nathan and his pals as this web series carves its way through its first season web show fans. It should prove to be a fun ride.

ODNT Spotlighted in WeHo News Feature Article

It was the final day of filming for the pilot of the new web series Old Dogs & New Tricks, and the production was shooting its last scheduled scene.

West Hollywood bakery Plaisir had been transformed into a gay dance club, and director Arvin Bautista was creating the pilot’s complicated opening shot, in which the camera strolls through a group of gorgeous twenty-somethings before coming to rest on forty-something actor Leon Acord.

“Look at this old guy over here,” Arvin directed the extras, gesturing towards Acord. “He’s old! What’s he doing here? He’s taking up your space! He shouldn’t be here. He shouldn’t even exist!”

Acord pulled a face.

As the show’s creator, writer and co-executive producer as well as its star, he was concerned about the tone of the scene.

“I don’t want Nathan to seem pathetic,” he said to his director.
